Laparoscopic Surgery

Welcome Dharshini Hospital

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique where operations are performed through small incisions (usually 0.5–1.5 cm) with the help of a camera. It is also known as "keyhole surgery" or "minimally invasive surgery."

Type of laparoscopic surgery:

    1. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder Removal)
  • Procedure: Several small incisions are made, and the surgeon removes the gallbladder using the laparoscope and special tools.
  • Recovery: Patients can usually go home the same day or the next, with a full recovery in about 1–2 weeks.
  • Advantages: Compared to open surgery, there's less pain, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring.
    • 2. Laparoscopic Appendectomy (Appendix Removal)
  • Procedure: The surgeon uses a laparoscope to view the hernia and repair it with mesh, ensuring that the tissue stays in place.
  • Recovery: Patients usually experience less pain and faster recovery (1–2 weeks) than open hernia repair.
  • Advantages: Smaller scars, shorter hospital stay, and reduced risk of infection.

    • 4. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (Uterus Removal)
  • Procedure: The uterus is detached and removed through the small incisions. Sometimes, parts may be removed through the vagina.
  • Recovery: Recovery is typically 2–4 weeks, which is faster than with traditional open hysterectomy.
  • Advantages: Shorter hospital stay, less pain, and quicker return to normal activities.
    • 5. Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery (Weight Loss Surgery)
  • Procedure: The stomach is either reduced in size or rerouted to promote weight loss.
  • Recovery: Most patients stay in the hospital for 2–3 days and resume regular activities within 2–4 weeks.
  • Advantages: Less invasive than traditional methods, leading to a faster recovery and reduced complications.

    • General Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery:
  • Smaller Incisions: Typically 0.5 to 1.5 cm, leading to less scarring.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Many laparoscopic surgeries are outpatient procedures or involve shorter stays.
  • Less Pain: Patients report less postoperative pain due to smaller wounds.
  • Quicker Recovery: Patients return to normal activities faster compared to open surgeries.
